Sheep in the Snow

The nearest village, Longtown is three miles away.  It has a pub, The Crown and a village shop and post office.  Ewyas Harold, three and a half miles distant, has two pubs, The Dog and the Temple Bar, a village shop, two butchers and a fish and chip shop. (Telephone 01981 240237 to pre-order and pick up on the way up to the farm.) Both Tesco and Waitrose home deliver to the Farm. If you wish to shop online, book a delivery slot on the day of your arrival, let us know and we will put your shopping away.  The larder is stocked with oils, tea, coffee, sugar, salt etc. Fresh herbs are available in season from pots on the patio - just help yourself. If you wish to purchase pork, beef, lamb or sausages, all reared on the farm, just let us know. Vegetables and eggs are available for purchase, direct from the kitchen garden.

The Farm

We are very happy for our guests to explore our fields and woods and use them to picnic, to paint or to fly kites. Depending on the season, you are welcome to raid hedgerows for jam making or making elderflower wine.  You can borrow jam pans, thermometers etc. so you can take back your produce. We are quite happy to show you round and explain the running of our small family farm and you can help to collect the eggs or feed a pig with us. Or, if it is privacy you require, you will get all the peace you need on this remote hill farm.

The Rayburn

The hot water, central heating, underfloor heating and oven all run from the wood-fired Rayburn range in kitchen. It is a very efficient system. The kettle whistles within 15 minutes of it being lit, although using the oven will take longer. We will give you a quick lesson (should you require it) when you arrive and if needed will be happy to light it for you at a convenient time. We will supply sufficient wood for the Rayburn and the wood-burning stove.

Around and About

Hay on Wye is 12 miles away, famous for its many book shops and annual Literature Festival. There is also a castle, many other interesting independent shops to explore and it now has its own small cinema. Market day is on Thursday, with a sheep and cattle sale at the livestock market and with stalls in the square. There is canoeing available on the River Wye.

Abergavenny is a bustling Welsh market town with many shops, banks, a Castle and Museum to visit. Close by is The Walnut Tree, a Michelin starred restaurant. The famous food festival is held each year in September where the whole town is taken over with stalls of local and national produce. The Skirrid and Sugar Loaf Mountains are on the outskirts of the town.

Hereford is a Cathedral City on the River Wye with many amenities, including The Mappa Mundi and a Chained Library in the beautiful cathedral. There is a popular race course which has horse racing on a regular basis and in 2012 it will host the Three Choirs Festival.

Some of the unique pleasures of this area are the many local events: village shows, opera evenings, beer and skittles, the mobile cinema (Flicks in the Sticks) that all form an important part of rural life. Just ask if you're interested.
